About
This task, I have worked with Domagoj Bui and Urvi Prahbu. UseLess is an energy tracking app designed for UC Utilities, that students, faculty, and staff can engage with every day, letting them be connected to facilities managers on the campus and in the UC power plant.
Background
Secondary research

To develop a background understanding of our topic, the first step was to find and analyze secondary sources of research.
We looked at articles and reports on a global and local level, made notes and categorized the data according to thematic commonalities.

Research questions
An analysis of the topic from these areas of inquiry brought to our attention the following existing issues:
-
Ohio is among the worst states in the US at modern energy production and equitable access
-
Conventional energy is becoming more expensive which is targeting low-income families and poor communities
-
Climate is becoming harsher and weather conditions are forecasted to
The potential stakeholders
Mapping and defining the stakeholders was integral to developing the final research question.
We eventually defined our focus in the context of education, which would include
-
Students enrolled and living on-campus
-
Energy providers for the institutions
-
Green Initiatives
-
Student financial aid plans

Sustainable adoption of clean energy could create ways to reduce the overall cost of attendance for students.
The findings from our initial research brought our focus to energy costs and renewable alternatives for low-income student housing.
The survey

We decided to start local and began the research process by drafting questions to send to students enrolled at the University of Cincinnati.
The main idea behind the questionnaire is to derive insights of the student perception of renewable energy, their willingness to participate in initiatives, and present challenges that they may face.
The primary goal is to understand student motivation and willingness to adopt renewable energy alternatives if given the opportunity.
The interview
Primary research needed not only to explore the consumer (here, students) perspective, but also the opportunities and challenges that energy providers must deal with.
To know more about the possibility of adoption of clean energy alternatives, we conducted an interview with the Director of Utilities for UC.
Luckily, he invited us to visit the power plant.

The findings of visiting The Power Plant

Students are unaware of the work the UC Power Plant is putting in to reach sustainability goals
Utilities need an individualized management system potentially through an app
Existing student-led sustainability groups do not collaborate with each other, or are ineffective.

Value Hypothesis

For UC students
Who Make use of facilities on campus
The Solution Is an app that acts as a platform
That Provides isage costs monitoring of utilities
Unlike Anything done before for UC
Provides Inventivised reasons for students to conserve
resources on campus through contests, prizes,
features on social media, etc.
For Utilities and facilities managers
Who Need to become aware of problems on campus
The Solution Is the feature on the app that acts as a platform
That does Connects utility and facilities managers to students, faculty and staff.
Unlike (Benchmark the platform faculty currently use to book rooms/spaces or chairs for events or
classes)
Provides Quick accesss and connectivity between the power plant and their consumer stakeholders
